From hunting scenes clipped from cypress in Ancient Rome to the
tyrannosaur trimmed from twigs in Tim Burton's movie "Edward
Scissorhands," topiary has cast a magic spell. You don't need to
know anything about plants to relate to this garden art in which
common plants are laboriously shaped to look like something else
altogether.
Non-gardeners and children alike find topiary cheerful, and
sometimes spooky, especially the ones shaped like animals. Even
those plant lovers who are offended by topiary's artificiality are
impressed by the work and technical expertise required. It's
hard to top topiaries as show stoppers. Which is why they'll be
greeting an estimated 170,000 visitors ...
