Thunder Gulch and Suave Prospect, who ran 1-2, respectively, in
both the Fountain of Youth and the Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park,
put on a pretty good show, but all eyes will turn to Santa Anita
today as Timber Country and Afternoon Deelites, the two heavyweights
of the 3-year-old division, go at it.
Afternoon Deelites, owned by Burt Bacharach and trained by Richard
Mandella, has been pointed toward today's $200,000 San Felipe Stakes
from the start of his sophomore campaign, but when D. Wayne Lukas,
who was originally going to skip this mile-and-one-16th test, decided
to enter 2-year-old champion Timber Country, the race turned into a
big event.
Nobody has ever laid a glove on Afternoon ...
