Article: Wilson of Calif. declares plans to join GOP race, reorders field

LOS ANGELES -- Gov. Pete Wilson, who just a few months ago was struggling to retain his post, yesterday significantly rearranged the 1996 Republican presidential roster by announcing plans to place his name on it soon.

Though Wilson said that for now he has only approved plans for an "exploratory committee," a legal mechanism that will allow him to solicit money and support, he left no doubt about his intentions.

"We've brought fundamental change to California," the second-term governor told a small group of hand-picked supporters and journalists who assembled here from across the country. "Now we have a responsibility to bring it to the nation."
