ARLINGTON -- Michael Phillips, stepping from Bagels By Us to the
sidewalk of Massachusetts Avenue the other day, asserted that with a
little imagination he could hear the echo of hoofbeats announcing the
birth of a nation 220 years ago.
So what did he think happened on the eve of events in Concord and
Lexington that we celebrate today as Patriots' Day?
The 68-year-old retired electrician dug for verses learned so many
years earlier.
"Two if by land, one if by sea, and I on the opposite shore shall
. . ." He paused, cursing his memory, then tried again.
"One if by sea, two if by land . . ."
That wasn't it either. Finally, an exasperated Phillips said,
"The point is, Paul Revere got the signal ...
