The young woman stood sobbing in her travel agent's office. She
should have been on her way to spend a week basking in the sun at a
Mexican beach resort. But her fully paid, $1,000 holiday -- her first
in three years -- was in jeopardy, she had just learned, because the
tour company flying her to Mexico suddenly had gone out of business.
"She thought her whole life was ruined," says Sharon Perry,
manager of En Route Travel of Washington, conveyor of the bad news
that Club America Vacations of Atlanta, one of the nation's largest
tour operators, had shut down -- stranding an estimated 2,000
travelers at Caribbean and Mexican beach resorts and upsetting the
plans of another 9,000 who had made ...
