The termites will get you if you don't watch out. In fact, they
can get you even if you do watch out.
That is because they work inside the wood, tunneling, eating you
out of house and home until everything collapses. In other words,
you cannot see the damage; a termite-damaged beam may look fine from
the outside, but on the inside, whew!
The termite that does this job on your house is the subterranean
termite, which basically lives in the ground and goes to wood for
food and to ground to nourish fellow termites.
