A couple of decades ago, when theater was being dragged new
places by Jerzy Grotowski and Peter Brook, it looked as if their
inspiration, Antonin Artaud, was to be posthumously enshrined.
Artaud's downplaying of text -- his emphasis on gesture, on primal
grunts and shrieks, on the breakdown of the safety zone between
audience and performers -- helped usher in "director's theater."
