"King Arthur" was one of the triumphs of the 1691 theatrical
season in London, and this "semi-opera" was one of the great
achievements of Henry Purcell's career. The composer's glorious
music survives in concert and on recordings, but until the
commemoration of the 300th anniversary of Purcell's death, this
season, "King Arthur" has probably not been staged in the form
intended by Purcell and his co-creator, John Dryden, for more than
two centuries.
Earlier this year in London and Paris, William Christie and Les
Arts Florissants presented the first full-scale modern professional
revival of "King Arthur." This week the Boston Early Music Festival
