She's called "a living saint," and ordinary people and dignitaries
alike instantly see something convincing and valuable in the person
of Mother Teresa of Calcutta.
With the recognition of a Nobel Peace Prize, and her visits to the
convents of her missionary order in many parts of the world,
including New Bedford and Boston this week, Mother Teresa has an
unusual visibility.
Yet there have been many others recognized as "living saints."
These heroes and heroines of holiness in their lifetimes include the
charismatic religious reformer Francis of Assisi; Dom Helder Camara,
the bishop of Brazil's poorest; the Italian mystic and healer Padre
Pio; missionary doctors like Albert Schweitzer and ...
