First, Theresa Heinz's $675 million fortune may have prompted Mitt
Romney to consider 675 million reasons not to challenge Sen. John F.
Kerry, Heinz's new husband, in 1996. Now, some of Kerry's
contributors privately cite the same reasons not to dig as deeply
into their pockets to help the two-term Democrat as in the past.
Kerry's aides said that's not why he fell short of his $750,000
goal at his recent Boston fund-raiser with President Clinton. The
reason, they said, was that contributors were planning to attend so
many other fund-raising events for Kerry this month.
Among them: a gathering Wednesday at the Washington home of Sen.
Claiborne Pell of Rhode Island and a $500-a-head event ...
