RUMFORD, R.I. -- They had the look of would-be champions denied,
and even the skies seemed to mock them.
The three front-runners after two days of the Northeast Amateur
trudged through the first nine holes yesterday, watching their leads
evaporate as a morbid, sporadic drizzle fell on their heads. One was
2 over par, the other two were 4 over.
But methodically, one by one, they returned to their strengths.
Bud Still of the University of Arkansas and Scott Kammann of
Tennessee started driving the fairway. Wake Forest's Justin Roof
began to utilize his birdie-producing putting form.
Roof heads the field with a score of 3-under-par 204, after an
