Health workers expressed guarded optimism today that the Ebola
virus outbreak in Zaire can be contained despite a mounting death
toll from the incurable disease in and around the provincial city of
Kikwit.
Statistics released by the medical committee formed to fight the
disease said that as of midday today the infection had claimed 86
lives, up from 68 reported Monday. A total of 93 cases had been
confirmed, officials said.
Health workers said they were especially encouraged when two
people, who fell ill after having been to Kikwit and returning to
this capital, turned out to be suffering from amoebic dysentery, not
Ebola.
