Last Thursday's event in the 1995 Composers Conference at
Wellesley College -- 10 fellows and two guest composers, gathered
together for seminars, rehearsals, concerts and recording -- was
billed as a "Conversation and Concert" and it featured composer-
flutist-teacher Harvey Sollberger, who played a lively and important
part in the New York "uptown" contemporary- music scene from the
1960s onward.
%EC%Rigor, complexity, the charting of new pathways in
instrumental technique, all this shot through with a peculiarly
flinty, cerebral kind of intensity -- such was the atmosphere that
Sollberger managed to evoke both in his reminiscences and in the
music he brought along for people to hear.
