The Pentagon yesterday announced a major step to reform its
cumbersome arms acquisition process, setting up "integrated product
teams" to shepherd major weapons programs from inception to
battlefield.
Defense Undersecretary Paul Kaminski told reporters the teams for
individual programs will include contractors as well as military
service representatives, product managers, testers, designers and
Defense Department staff members from the very beginning of a
program.
He said the order went out in a May 10 letter from Defense
Secretary William J. Perry, and that the program could give some
preference in future contracts to companies that have proved
efficient and trustworthy in the past.
