In 1994, the federal government spent $63,014 per resident in tiny
Los Alamos County, N.M., more than it spent in any other county of
the nation, according to a Census Bureau analysis of where the
government's $1.3 trillion went last year.
Expenditures covered federal salaries and contracts, federal
grants and procurement contracts, Social Security, federal pensions
and welfare.
Locally, the Falls Church area ranked second in the nation at
$59,652 in federal spending per resident. The Fairfax City area was
third at $47,701. The District of Columbia was sixth at $36,536,
while Arlington County was eighth at $30,130 and the Alexandria area
15th at $18,703.
