You find them on busy streets. No rustic oases, urban
nurseries are full of pizazz, their character sharpened by their
small size and the surrounding assault of city life. Unlike
businesses that conduct themselves behind walls, city garden centers
are openly visible to passersby, part of the drive-by landscape. You
can see the proprietor wielding a hose, sprinkling annuals in
cell-packs as the macadam heats up in the summer sun.
The more unlikely the location, the more these centers are
treasured as signs of vital life in our city. There is, for
instance, an embattled bravado to Ricky's Flower Market in
Somerville, a former Citgo station surrounded by grinding traffic on
