Q. I have some wasps under the vinyl soffit near the entrance to
my house. Are they a hazard, and will their nests block the
ventilation?
B.S., Arlington
A. The wasps may indeed be a hazard, but generally, they will not
bother you if you don't bother them. The nest is unlikely to be big
enough to significally block the soffit ventilation. If they stay
near the nest and don't dive-bomb you when you go in and out, let
them be. They are really beneficial, eating many bad bugs, and
probably some good ones, too, but it can't be helped. They will die
off and abandon the nest in the fall, and will not reoccupy it.
If they do become a hazard, then you can dispatch them with a
hornet and wasp bomb, ...
