Inside a second-floor gymnasium at the Fairfax Police Public
Safety Academy, 42-year-old Lt. John Kirk sweated through a morning
workout, toggling between weight machines.
"Suck that gut in!" ordered someone in the back of the room, above
the hum of a stationary bike.
Nearby, officers Annie Mack, 34, and Virginia DiCesare, 31, curled
dumbbells, watching their form in the mirror and resting briefly
between sets. A few feet away, Bill Westen, a 28-year-veteran and the
most senior officer in the department, neared the end of his 35-
minute bike ride.
The officers are among a growing number of Fairfax police getting
in shape through the department's wellness program, which is aimed at
