Article: Catholic churches find their Cape overflowing

MASHPEE -- Chip Moreau was a minute or two late for 10 o'clock Mass in Christ the King Church last Sunday, which meant that the best he could hope for was a place to stand.

A seat was out of the question. As usual, every pew in the 1,100-seat Roman Catholic church had been filled long before Mass began. Even standing room was scarce: Scores of parishioners were ranged along both walls and across the back of the church, packed in cheek-by-jowl before stained-glass windows and votive candles.

"It's just exploded here," murmured the 39-year-old Moreau before beginning a search for a place to pray, a quest that would take him on a circuit all the way around the church.
