A handful of geese swam in the dark green water of the Charles
River as the sun was setting over the bend near Harvard University.
A referee's whistle from a nearby basketball game interrupted the
sound of a steady flow of cars on Memorial Drive and the panting of
rollerbladers and joggers along the river's bike path.
The geese bobbed for food seemingly undisturbed by urban
movements, the light of the rising moon hitting their little ripples
just right on a recent summer evening, creating flickers of silver,
like ice.
There is beauty on the Charles. It is a natural antidote for
