An Irish bishop has been summoned to Rome to explain to Vatican
officials his calls for an open debate on the Roman Catholic Church's
requirement of celibacy for priests.
Bishop Brendan Comiskey of Wexford, Ireland, sparked controversy
earlier this summer when he called for a debate on the issue of
celibacy at a time when Ireland is experiencing a decline in the
number of men becoming priests.
Ireland's primate, Cardinal Cahal Daly, disavowed Bishop
Comiskey's comment. Bishop Comiskey said he is not advocating an end
to celibacy. "The only thing I did was call for a debate," he told
The Irish Times.
No date has been set for Bishop Comiskey's meeting at the Vatican
with Cardinal Bernadin ...
