Melo-Tone Vending Inc. of Somerville, which operates about 1,500
cigarette vending machines in Massachusetts, says it may have to lay
off 80 of its 100 workers if President Clinton's proposal to ban the
machines is adopted.
"The president is going to destroy people like myself and he's not
going to stop kids from smoking," company president Jack Kerner said
yesterday.
Ackerley Outdoor Advertising expects another Clinton proposal
restricting cigarette advertising to have little impact on its
billboard business. Since 1987, the company has limited cigarette
ads to 15 percent of its 2,400 billboards.
