LENOX -- The 1995 Tanglewood Festival of Contemporary Music
opened with a retrospective of music that is no longer quite
contemporary by a composer who certainly is, Steve Reich.
For many years, the Tanglewood new-music festival, the most
prestigious in America, was underwritten by the late wine importer
Paul Fromm. At one point Fromm withdrew his support because he
became convinced that the festival was overlooking the popular and
much-discussed movement of minimalism. Now the Fromm Foundation
annually sponsors a concert by a prominent new-music group during the
