LENOX -- The 1995 Tanglewood Festival of Contemporary Music opened with a retrospective of music that is no longer quite contemporary by a composer who certainly is, Steve Reich.

For many years, the Tanglewood new-music festival, the most prestigious in America, was underwritten by the late wine importer Paul Fromm.
