In his final days, the people he knew best kept coming
around. Moose, Whitey, Yogi. Mickey Mantle was no legend to them.
Just the son of an Oklahoma lead and zinc miner who also happened to
be a very good baseball player.
Few people dared dream the life that The Mick would lead for
18 years in the major leagues. By the time he retired in 1968,
Mantle had played in 12 World Series for the New York Yankees,
leading them to seven world championships, and won three Most
Valuable Player awards. He still ranks eighth all-time with 536 home
runs. His death yesterday at 2:10 a.m. at Baylor University Medical
Center from rapidly spreading cancer calls attention to the words of
Navy ...
