PETERBOROUGH, N.H. -- For most of 1996, New Hampshire cultural
organizations will feature works associated with the MacDowell
Colony, the country's oldest and largest artists colony. The
announcement of the New Hampshire MacDowell Celebration was made
Sunday when composer George Crumb received the 1995 MacDowell gold
medal for artistic achievement.
The Celebration, as the statewide festival is being called, marks
the 100th anniversary of the arrival here of composer Edward
MacDowell and his wife, and former student, the pianist Marian
MacDowell. Their purchase of Hillcrest Farm led in 1907 to the
founding of the 450-acre artists colony with its isolated studios for
work and communal dining ...
