LENOX -- The Boston Symphony's Tanglewood season traditionally
ends with a big blowout. Last summer Christoph Eschenbach closed the
season to such effect with the Beethoven Ninth Symphony that he was
invited back this summer, when the chosen work was the Verdi Requiem.
Despite an uneven solo quartet Sunday, it was a great performance
in a style one might not have anticipated. There is a "German"
tradition of performing the Requiem documented in a notable
commercial recording by the Hungarian conductor Ferenc Fricsay and
even more remarkably in a recently rediscovered live recording of a ...
