NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. -- John Hickson moved up on Maine's list of
sporting success stories yesterday in the gusting winds that swept
over Quidnessett CC on Narragansett Bay. He finished on the shaky
side with three bogeys over the final four holes but hung on to win
the 75th New England PGA Championship by one shot over favorite son
Dana Quigley.
The victory may not have elevated Hickson, a native of Hampden,
Maine, and an instructor at the Bethel Inn golf school, to the upper
echelons achieved by Joan Benoit Samuelson or the Black Bear hockey
team, but it made him the first Pine Tree State resident pro to win
