Does art make an economic impact anywhere? Yes, according to
information from both the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and
the Art Gallery of Ontario.
Spending associated with visitors to the Barnes Exhibit in
Ontario got cash registers ringing to the tune of $137 million in
goods and services across the province. The study showed that the
600,000 visitors (20 percent from outside Ontario) to the exhibit
spent $75 million alone on trips to the showing. The $3.75 million
the government spent to bring the exhibit to Ontario "has achieved
phenomenal returns, in some cases far exceeding our original
expectations," said Premier Bob Rae.
