Article: Rhode Island's Pell joins list of retiring Democrats

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Claiborne Pell, the blue-blood Democrat from Rhode Island known for his leadership in education, arts and foreign affairs, said yesterday he will retire at the end of his term in 1996 after 36 years in the Senate.

"There is a natural time for all life's adventures to come to an end," Pell said.

The 76-year-old lawmaker was first elected in 1960 and is the third most senior member of the Senate after Strom Thurmond, a Republican from South Carolina, and Robert C. Byrd, a Democrat from West Virginia.
