Article: Forest fires fought with community spirit In Rockport, scores drop work, come to aid in effort

ROCKPORT -- When Peter A. Anderson left for work Tuesday, he was a button-down bank president. He returned home that night a sweaty, sooty firefighter.

Anderson was eating lunch when he heard about a call for volunteers to help fight a relentless series of forest fires here. Spurred both by civic-mindedness and a childhood fantasy, the Rockport National Bank executive traded his gray suit for blue jeans, slung a shovel over his shoulder and told his staff he'd be putting out real fires for a change.

Anderson joined scores of volunteers who have taken temporary leave of their jobs over the past two days to help battle the blazes. They have included plumbers, ministers, mothers, students, ...
