The National Rifle Association's top officials, facing a political crisis because of the group's perceived association with so-called militia groups, sought to distance the NRA from the paramilitary movement today but also predicted it will help defeat President Clinton in 1996.

"We don't train for a revolt in the woods; we train for safety," NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre told the group's annual convention here. "We don't break the laws; we help make the laws."
