The National Rifle Association's top officials, facing a political
crisis because of the group's perceived association with so-called
militia groups, sought to distance the NRA from the paramilitary
movement today but also predicted it will help defeat President
Clinton in 1996.
"We don't train for a revolt in the woods; we train for safety,"
NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre told the group's annual
convention here. "We don't break the laws; we help make the laws."
At the same time, LaPierre, who has been widely criticized by
politicians for referring in a fund-raising letter to federal law
enforcement agents as "jackbooted government thugs," said Clinton
