When presidential candidate Bob Dole returned a $1,000 campaign
contribution from the Log Cabin Republicans, it was the first many
had heard of the obscure gay political organization that has many of
its roots in Boston.
But as controversy over Dole's late-summer snub spread, it quickly
became clear that many gay activists, whose cause has long been
associated with the Democratic Party, are trying to play an active
role in Republican presidential primaries.
Leaders of Log Cabin Republicans say their membership is growing
and has reached 10,000 members.
Dole may have shunned them, but one of the Senate majority
leader's rivals -- Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania -- has accepted
