Kathy Ann Woodson felt somewhat disoriented as she waited in line
at Cole Field House yesterday, along with 1,200 classmates in
mortarboards from the University of Maryland's University College. It
was more than just graduation-day jitters.
"It's the first time I've ever been on campus," said Woodson, 34,
a resident of Bristol, Va., who was receiving a bachelor's degree in
management.
Welcome to the new frontier of higher education: "distance
learning." Standard pedagogic setups such as classrooms, lectures and
seminars are not particularly useful. Instead, students absorb
information by voice mail, videotapes and computer conferences with
professors.
