Read Boston, the child literacy campaign announced last week by
Mayor Menino, is blessedly free of educational cant. Instead, it
begins with a message to parents that children's literature is
flat-out crucial to a youngster's success.
Before they reach toddler age, children should be read to and
learn to appreciate books. Parents who fail to read to their
youngsters are placing them on a perilous track of remediation,
alienation and failure. In Boston's public schools, half of all
third-graders read below grade level. School officials, the Boston
Compact and university researchers vow to undo that unnerving trend
