My family sets a lot of store by Key West. Our most glamorous
member, my great aunt Esther, gravitated here in the early 1930s. She
was an actress, an artist and a writer, and a friend of D.H.
Lawrence, Dos Passos and Hemingway. She lived in Key West until the
1960s, and her nephews relished their Key West visits, where they
gathered with the worldly and the witty daily for cocktails -- often
at the Hemingway House, occupied by Ernest's second wife.
So what if it's not the most peaceful town. There are still
tranquil parts of the island to be found. And in the town itself,
population 33,000, there is a rich ethnic mix, a large gay community,
and wealthy and poor live side by side. ...
