"Tackling the Monster" is the fourth, final and best episode of
"Marsalis on Music" -- and the strongest argument for the value of
all four. It airs tonight at 8 on Channel 2.
Cellist Yo-Yo Ma is Marsalis' guest for a discussion of
practicing, which might seem a very narrow focus for an hour's
entertainment. But Marsalis seizes the opportunity to refute the
criticism that the arts are a "frill" -- most of his 12-point
strategy for learning to master an instrument or a piece of music is
really advice on how to do anything well, advice on how to live your
