Boston Ballet puts on an especially spiffy "Nutcracker" this
year, with new costumes, first-of-a-kind choreography by Bruce Marks
and Danny Pelzig, and some spectacular stage effects, including a
flying Dr. Drosselmeyer. The Ballet's official explanation for the
changes: "It was time to refresh the production." The unofficial
reason: "Nutcracker" sales are down. "Nutcracker" ticket receipts
have fallen from a high of 140,000 in 1992 (the 100th anniversary of
"The Nutcracker") to approximately 127,000 in each of the last two
