MONTREAL -- Choosing politics over the demands of family, Lucien
Bouchard announced yesterday that he will seek the premiership of
Quebec and press the campaign for independence from Canada.
Bouchard's decision almost guarantees that the confederation is
headed for another bitter struggle over national unity, after barely
surviving the last.
"The fundamental objective of the Parti Quebecois remains
sovereignty," Bouchard said at a news conference. "We've never been
so close.
"We will hold another referendum that will be the winning one for
Quebec," he pledged, refusing to set a time frame but hinting that
the vote may take place in the spring of 1997.
