The worst-kept secret in golf became official yesterday at a press
conference in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. Tom Kite was introduced as
the captain of the 1997 US Ryder Cup team that will travel to the
European continent for the first time to try to regain the prize it
lost in September at Rochester, N.Y.
Kite's mandate hit home when he walked into the lobby of the PGA
of America's headquarters a day earlier. "They were quick to point
out there was an empty trophy case," he said via telephone hookup.
"The No. 1 priority is to bring back the Ryder Cup. This is the
start of a dream come true."
