The object of all this desire is 1995 Happy Holidays Barbie.

Since 1988, Mattel Inc. has issued an annual special edition of America's most popular doll.

This year, Mattel seems to have badly underestimated demand, which may be driven by adult collectors who regard Barbie as an objet d'art.

Locally, the shortage was made worse this week by the breakdown of a delivery truck that delayed a shipment of 2,900 Happy Holidays Barbies to the Boston area, the Massachusetts Office of Consumer Affairs said yesterday.
