As he prepares to take over as Senate president, Ways and Means Chairman Thomas Birmingham is keeping the political world in the dark as to his most important leadership appointment -- the next Ways and Means Committee chairman.

Speculation has focused on Sen. Cheryl A. Jacques (D-Needham), the current Senate Judiciary Committee chairwoman and an early backer of Birmingham in his battle with Majority Leader Louis Bertonazzi (D-Milford) for the Senate presidency.
