As he prepares to take over as Senate president, Ways and Means
Chairman Thomas Birmingham is keeping the political world in the dark
as to his most important leadership appointment -- the next Ways and
Means Committee chairman.
Speculation has focused on Sen. Cheryl A. Jacques (D-Needham),
the current Senate Judiciary Committee chairwoman and an early backer
of Birmingham in his battle with Majority Leader Louis Bertonazzi
(D-Milford) for the Senate presidency.
But other names also crop up. An interesting theory holds that
Birmingham may dip into the Bertonazzi camp and pick Sen. Robert
Durand (D-Marlborough) for what is, next to the presidency, the most
