Article: Rivals gear up for run at Dole Matching funds to finance ads

WASHINGTON -- The Republican nomination for president is likely to be locked up in the first dozen weeks of 1996. Now, as Bob Dole heads into the New Hampshire primary with a large lead, the question is whether his rivals, pumping money into a barrage of anti-Dole ads, can undo the deep imprint of 1995.

After all, 1995 was the year when three of Dole's toughest potential opponents stepped aside: California Gov. Pete Wilson, who dropped out, and retired Gen. Colin Powell and House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who decided not to run. Moreover, Dole's strategy to prevent one of the remaining candidates to emerge as the top challenger so far has succeeded.
