Dr. Robert H. Ebert, 81, founding father of the Harvard Community
Health Plan and former dean of Harvard Medical School, died Monday of
prostate cancer at his home in Wayland.
A midwestern visionary who was also a hard-headed pragmatist, Dr.
Ebert withstood the opposition and scorn of colleagues to establish
New England's first health maintenance organization 27 years ago.
Eventually Dr. Ebert's vision transformed the region's medical
landscape; New England now leads the nation in the growth of such
prepaid health plans. More than that, he lived to see the nation
embrace his view of the most cost-effective way to deliver
high-quality medical care.
