For David Berman, the small bottle arrived in the form of a
Christmas present, a little help from a friend. The gift-giver, like
many people who know Berman, thought the 43-year-old Plymouth
cabinetmaker was working too hard. Perhaps melatonin would help him
get a little rest.
And it did. "I'd never taken drugs in the '60s, but it must have
been somewhat close to this," Berman says, recalling the first night
he took one of the pills he describes as tasting like little orange
candies. "I had remarkably vivid dreams, and I woke up with a
feeling of complete restfulness. And I thought to myself, `Well,
that was fun. I can certainly do that again.' "
