TOKYO -- All over Japan yesterday, news media flashed reports of
the conviction of three US servicemen in the rape of an Okinawa
schoolgirl, a case that for the last six months has created turmoil
in US-Japan relations.
But almost nowhere in the avalanche of coverage were the words
"rape" and "sexual assault" used to describe what is known here as
"the American soldiers assault incident" or "the elementary school
female student assault incident."
After months of public protest, and apologies from President
Clinton, US Ambassador Walter F. Mondale and Defense Secretary
William Perry, most Japanese by now understand that what happened was
a rape. But for weeks ...
