Journey") was given by Schubert himself, who sang it "in a voice
trembling with emotion," according to Joseph von Spaun, who reports
that he and his friends "remained quite astonished by the gloomy mood
of these songs."
Sunday afternoon at All Saints Church, Dorchester, Allen Shearer
(baritone) and Barbara Shearer (piano) gave an account of "Die
Winterreise" that was superbly faithful to the blasted affections and
frozen landscapes -- some 24 songs worth -- depicted therein.
Indeed, their every phrase, every gesture told you that they had
