HAVERHILL -- The last piano factory in New England will close --
along with a chapter in musical history -- if it doesn't raise at
least $500,000 to strike harmony with creditors, its owners say.
A California company that builds electronic player pianos wants
to buy the Mason & Hamlin piano name and factory and move production
to that state.
A bankruptcy court hearing is scheduled to be held April 5 in US
bankruptcy court in Worcester to either allow the current owners to
continue operation or sell the business to Music Systems Research,
which is offering to pay creditors off at a higher rate than the
current owners now can.
