"You talkin' to me? You talkin' to me?" The most famous line in
movies since Rhett Butler's "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn"
was spoken by Robert De Niro as psychotic Travis Bickle in Martin
Scorsese's "Taxi Driver" in 1976. It's being spoken again on the
large screen, in spruced-up Dolby sound, starting today, because the
film is being reissued for its 20th anniversary. And yes, it still
talks to us. De Niro, in a now-legendary improvisation, was looking
into a mirror when he spoke. Just, of course, as the film held --
and still holds -- a mirror to America.
Far from being dated in its central theme, the film now seems more
