Popping high-dose beta carotene pills does nothing for your
health, and is certainly no substitute for eating plenty of spinach,
carrots and other vegetables and fruits, according to a new study
released yesterday.
And if you smoke cigarettes, a second study by the National Cancer
Institute indicates that beta carotene pills might actually increase
your risk of lung cancer -- a finding also reported two years ago in
Finland.
Consumption of beta carotene, from which the body makes vitamin A,
has in recent years been linked to reduced risk of cancer, strokes,
heart disease, cataracts, artery-hardening and arthritis -- but
