NEWTON -- When Rev. John K. Stendahl, the new pastor of the
Lutheran Church of the Newtons, arrived in early December, the church
had just completed an interior renovation that moved the altar closer
to the congregation and took it off its raised platform. It also
opened up the chancel, the area around the altar.
The changes had been in the works for some time. But it so
happened that the first Sunday the rearrangement was completed, Dec.
3, was Rev. Stendahl's first Sunday service. The symbolism suited
him just fine.
"To me, this kind of change signifies openness and a willingness
to adapt," he said last week. "It felt good to come at a time when
